If Cydia was working fine, but is now crashing in the first few seconds of loading do this:
Delete the contents of the /var/lib/apt/lists folder (except for the folder called “partial”) through SSH.
How to do that:
If you’re comfortable using a command line terminal you can do that.. But most people aren’t, so you can do it this way too:
- Turn SSH and Wi-Fi on in your iphone (can do this through toggles in Bossprefs, SBSettings etc;) If you don’t see the option for SSH in these or your similar toggling program, then you need to install SSH on your phone. OpenSSH is a good one that you can find in Installer. If it still isn’t showing up or working then you need to also install BSD Subsystem via Installer.
- Open the SSH program of your choice on your computer (for mac I like Cyberduck – Fugu is another but it’s a little sketchy sometimes. For PC, try WinSCP or try searching the google)
- Get the Wi-Fi IP address of your phone. You can find this through SBSettings, or other IP displaying app.. Should be something like: 192.168.3.8 (your numbers will be slightly different) and not: 77.76.23.2- You can also find the IP address of your phone the way Apple intended by opening the Settings app on your phone, selecting Wi-Fi, and pressing the little blue arrow at the right of your current network’s name – the first one listed is IP Address, that’s what you want. Or you can log in to your router through a browser and find it through the DHCP network list. Not going to go into how to do that now – search for how to do that for your specific router on the internet if you’re curious.
- Enter the Wi-Fi IP address of your phone in the SSH program and use the username: root and the password: alpine to connect to it (if you changed the username and password.. you would know, but those are the defaults.)
- Find the folder /var/lib/apt/lists (may have to backtrack to the var folder – default log-in isn’t always the root folder where var is)
- I opted to back up all of the files I was deleting simply by dragging them to a folder on the desktop – you don’t have to, but having a way to undo stuff is usually a good option to have.
- Delete all of the files except for the partial folder
- Disconnect the SSH connection in your program
- Open Cydia and download horrible all-pink themes for Winterboard
Why did that happen:
Some repositories were corrupted or broken – it’s not your fault. Personally, this happened immedietely after I locked the program with the app “lockdown” which adds a file to this exact folder. So, after confirming that Cydia worked again, I tried locking it again, restarting, turning on and off different lock types – and cydia worked fine. I also hid the icon with bossprefs – Checked to see if this was the culprit and it was not. So far I haven’t had any trouble using lockdown or hiding icons through bossprefs or SBSettings. Seems this happened just because of a few bad repositories.
/* EDIT July 9th 09: You can also try iPhoneBrowser, a windows application. Here is a nice article about the features, looks pretty cool, eh? Thanks to theaizunsnapbox and hopeless (in the comments section) for suggesting and trying out this method. */
/*EDIT July 20th 09: If deleting the contents of the lists folder does not fix the problem you can also try deleting the contents of the /var/lib/dpkg/updates/ folder. Thanks to shinigamiboi and others for testing this out. */
/*EDIT April 8th 10: A question has been asked several times; How do you get installer on your phone without re-breaking? – I’m currently without iPhone atm (life is tough 😛 ) – so if anyone has an answer to this please comment below*/

i had this problem when my phone crashed while installing an app. i fixed it by deleting the temp.i file in /var/lib/dpkg/updates/. i opened it in notepad, and all it had in it was stuff about the installation of the app that i tried installing while it crashed. i don’t know what the file labeled “0” is (located in the same folder), but it has nothing to do with the problem.

I am having the same issue, I was downloading and installing a Theme when I received a text message. The iPhone then crashed and when it rebooted I can no longer get into Cydia…. I have tried to jailbreak several times, I have tried the above, but I have used the DiskAid app to remove the files. Cydia just opens to the loading screen and the back to Spring board…
I dont know how to remove the Cydia application to try and reinstall.
Please help…

July 9, 2009 at 7:56 pm
They are repositories – basically links to places, that host the files. They get updated every time you open cydia, and sometimes one of them can download incorrectly. So when you delete them and open cydia again, cydia has a chance to download the file correctly. Glad it worked out for you.

Same here. 3GS with OS3.0
Deleted /var/lib/apt/lists
nothing in /var/lib/dpkg/updates/
And it still does not run. Not even in ‘Safe Mode’, or after a reboot.
Any ideas?
Dimitris
August 10, 2009 at 9:17 am
It sounds illogical, but I was able to fix it with a weird way:
1) ssh to the iPhone, and do a “cd /Applications/Cydia.app”
2) I did a “./Cydia” but nothing happened
3) but then I did a “./Cydia_” and I tapped the Cydia icon, and …!!!… IT LAUNCHED!!!
It rebuilded the /var/lib/apt/lists that I have deleted and it was A-OK
I did (to be on the safe side) a re-installation of Cydia, and now it looks ok…
(I have not rebooted yet… but I am an optimist…)
If anyone can explain this … I will be very happy!

Here’s a funky twist, when I run “rm /var/lib/dpkg/updates/*.i” I get a “Permissions denied” error. Odd, so I tried granting permission by running “chmod 7777 /var/lib/dpkg/updates/*.i” which itself generated a “Operation not permitted” error. Any further advice?

With a little help from google, I found the answer to the chmod problem. You need su privileges, duh! After su-ing, I a was able to rm to my hearts content. Though Cidya still didn’t work. But with the permissions fix, a reinstall of Cidya fixed the problem. I’m back to downloading pink themes for my iphone. 😉

i tried nearly hundreds of cydia solutions to no avail. you can see all the things i tried on here: http://personaldna.blogspot.com/2009/09/things-to-try-to-fix-cydia-from-all.html
i just restored, re-jailbroke. cydia opened at first , but after i ran apt-backup and restore from backup.. cydia died it opens and closes.
I will try that solution to remove
/var/lib/dpkg/updates/

September 9, 2009 at 10:36 pm
@ CrackCorn
there is no chmod 7777 that’s why you got a “Operation not permitted” error
its chmod 777 (3 not 7) but more proper is chmod 644
(chmod usualy wants 3 numbers.
[The 4rth is for the suid bit etc. if you don’t know what it is don’t mess with it])
Of course a
sudo rm fileName
is always the best solution.

I have a jailbroken 3GS and just recently it has fallen to cydia crashing upon loading. I have tried to follow the instructions and getting to the specified directory with cyberduck. I have gone ahead and toggled ssh in sbsettings but cannot connect through cyberduck using the instructions. I can go to terminal and verify the directory and its files are there but using correct ip and scfp protocol on port 21 or 22 won’t connect. How do I verify if ssh has been installed on my iPhone? And, if ssh is not there how one would go and install without cydia? thanks in advance!

IDK if this was listed or not but the 1st method listed didn’t quite work for me but it got me on the right track. Removing all files except “partial” folder didn’t resolve my problem but I knew it started after adding some new repo’s so I went into the ” partial” folder and deleted all repo’s except Cydia, HacknDev, and ModMyi, which I knew I had been using for awhile before the problem started. Anyway, I deleted these and Bob’s ur Uncle! Hope this helps.

This looks like a pretty common question, and one that hasn’t been answered yet. I’m sure it’s possible (in fact, i’ve looked before, and i believe it was pretty complicated) to install without re-breaking, but you may just want to re-break and put installer on from the get-go.

I found that my problem was with the xsellize repo using trial and error. Just removing everything but the ‘partial’ folder in apt/lists didn’t solve it because the files were just downloaded again by cydia and it crashed at a later state.
So what I did was go to:
/private/etc/apt/sources.list.d
Edit the file ‘cydia.list’ and remove the xsellize row.
And then go to:
/private/var/lib/apt/lists
Remove the xsellize files and nothing else.
Works now, though I will not be adding that source again.

I browsed several sites and ended up deleting “ZodTTD” in the “private/etc/apt/sources.list.d” folder.
I then tried deleting all the files except the “partial” folder in “var/lib/apt/lists”. Still Cydia wasn’t working.
Finally, I came across this site and after deleting the folder contents in “var/lib/dpkg/updates/”, my Cydia opened! Thanks a bunch!!!!

Hello!
I have a problem though…
I bought a used iphone off cragslist and wanted to start fresh with it…
Restored to 3.1.2, and then blackra1n to JB. I have yet to be able to open cydia after that though. It just says “Loading Data” and then crashes after about 15 seconds.
I have read that there may be some corrupted files on the iphone and that I need to “SSH” them off. But the phone doesnt have SSH. You say to get SSH on the phone to install it from “Installer”. But apparently you get “Installer” from cydia, which I cannot open.
I feel that I am very stuck here.
This phone was to a be a present for a family member on T-mobile, and now I can’t even get into cydia. to get it set up right. Please help, I am completely at a loss..

February 17, 2011 at 7:33 pm
This worked wonders on my crashing cydia. If you can still open cydia and click on the “manage” tab, then an easier way to do this is by downloading “ifile”. You can then access /var/lib/apt/lists and delete the files that way without using a computer or for those who don’t have as many computer skills or technical knowledge. Thanks again for the wonderful information!

after i delete everything on var/lib/apt/lists, cydia starts working again, but i get the same error again when the repo’s are trying to install themselves (this is opening cydia for the first time)…. so even though i get cydia to restart and work again, i keep going to the same error stage. What do i do to stop receiving the error on Cydia repo installation?

(iphone 2g – used redsn0w to upgrade/jailbreak/unlock to 3.0.1 from 2.0.2 – I’m sure this will work on 3.1.x as well)
I figured I’d leave my successful process, seeing as no one else has done this exactly:
*Cydia needed to update its essentials using just the Saurik source and the other repos were getting in the way*
I did not have anything in my /var/lib/dpkg/updates/ folder and all my lists came back after deleting the files in var/lib/apt/lists, so I methodically tried deleting each set of repo/source files and restarting cydia after each try. Here’s what I found out:
– Turn off Autolock. Cydia needs to update without interruption.
1. Delete every file in var/lib/apt/lists EXCEPT the 3 apt.saurik.com files. (I used iPhoneBrowser since I couldn’t keep Cydia open long enough to install SSH. You can keep iPhoneBrowser connected and turned on throughout the whole process. You can delete files and immediately restart Cydia to check for changes.)
2. Restart Cydia (no need to reboot your iphone). It should go to it’s Home page fairly quickly. That’s a good sign that you’ve broken the bad repo cycle. BUT…
3. When Cydia starts downloading updates and packages, CANCEL that process. You have stop Cydia from redownloading those bad repos. You’ll know if things are working when you see the red badge over the “Changes” tab indicating there are updates waiting.
4. A pop-up should appear telling you that Cydia needs to update some essentials. If not, tap the Changes tab. UPDATE ESSENTIALS. (I chose to only update essentials and not the full upgrade. Upgrade the rest after it’s working.)
5. Sit back and cross your fingers!! Do not touch anything! Cydia went into a “Reloading Data” stage that was eerily similar to all my other crashes, BUT… it seemed longer and dropped out when finished.
(I think I repeated step 1 as I didn’t think it had worked, but I’m not sure it’s needed. You can try it if this doesn’t work the first time through)
6. Open Cydia and hold your breath: I knew something was different when the “loading” font had changed. This time let it do all its downloading and updating. Everything should be fine now.
*I have not yet restored my previous files/settings with iTunes backup or Aptbackup, so we’ll see if Cydia will keep working after that. I know that restores can put back old files which could adversely affect Cydia, but I think this should still work after doing those. I will try to reply with an update!*

You’re really welcome Gito. Thank you for leaving this kind of an insightful and supportive comment it truly is constantly wonderful to hear when one thing I’ve written has resonated with somebody,
and maybe manufactured their day just a bit bit far
better.

I have a small background in magazine journalism but my new job requires no writing at all, except for emails. . . I would like to start doing some creative writing but I don’t know where to start, as in, what do I write about, and whether it’s actually worth bothering with or not. I’d probably be more inclined to do it if there was a competition or group I could join online or something like that. . . Does anyone do any writing or their own, if so, how did you get started? And what have you gotten out of it?.
